As you may or may not know, my husband and I are expecting our first child in mid-February; this makes me a little over 22 weeks or about 5 1/2 months along. As I have many friends and family with children, I know that it generally takes longer for your baby bump to “pop out” with your first pregnancy than your subsequent pregnancies. So tap, tap went my fingers waiting for that awkward stage of “did you eat a little too much ice cream” to transition to “OMG, you are pregnant-that is so exciting”- not that anyone should ever ask! Well, I am finally past that stage, I am showing and not fitting into most of my clothes. I knew this day would come, I have been shopping around (mostly online as maternity clothes in stores are hard to come by here in Austin) as well as following other stylish, pregnant women (we all need inspiration!) to see what items they make work with their changing bodies; but “window” shopping has turned into “Umm, I must have things to put on that fit”! As you can imagine, as a stylist, I am picky, I know I am pregnant but that will not stop me from being stylish- it is my livelihood after all! Naturally, people will look to what I am wearing while pregnant and I want to set a confident, stylish example! Pregnancy can be a trying time on a woman’s confidence as their body is forever changing, growing and doing new things; therefore I believe during this time in their lives it is especially important to feel and look amazing! Another hurdle with maternity wear is that a lot of it is very pricey, which can be a hard pill to swallow when you will be wearing these clothes for a short time; therefore I have made it my mission to find some options that are affordable for everyone, with a few pricier items splashed in-the way a lot of people do their everyday wardrobe! Because I know an abnormal number of pregnant women right now, I wanted to share my research up to this point.
The hardest part for me, and most pregnant women, is bottoms/pants for obvious reasons. Here are some favorites:
I was a skeptic, but after trying on these H&M maternity denim, I am a believer! They are a great color, fit, they look great and feel great!
These are the same as the grey H&M denim but in this fabulous, classic, dark wash-I had to order these and I can’t wait for them to come in!
Everyone wants to change it up sometimes and these skinny jeans with knee patches do just that! They will still go with everything but just add a little something different!
If you are looking to invest in a pair of high end maternity denim, I have found I like the fit of the AGs the best, they come in many colors.
Elastic waist, loose fitting crepe pants are not only in style but a great way to accommodate the growing bump! These specific ones are a great way to spice up your maternity wardrobe.
You may remember these great crepe pants from another post. I love this cobalt blue color (another trend) with the great zipper at the bottom that you can adjust depending on your shoe choice that day.
You can imagine I thought I had hit the jackpot when I found these amazing leggings at Zara, while they are not technically maternity leggings, they have a thick built-in, stretch waist band, a great panel detail on the lower leg and did I mention they are comfortable?! I may have bought them in two colors, navy and black!
Another OMG moment at Zara, these leggings with side vent, expandable waist band look like they were made for us pregnant ladies. They come in additional colors in store such as hunter green in addition to the 3 colors online-if you are pregnant, get these now and if you aren’t-still get them!
Yet again, Zara delivers, these legging inspired trousers are reminiscent of riding pants. They have a great zipper detail at the ankle and will stretch to fit with you! The burgundy color is the one I chose to add to my wardrobe!
Visit Zara for several more stylish legging options that will work with your bump!
Other items I love:
An item that can take you through several months of pregnancy and be worn a lot of ways for a lot of occasions is a jumpsuit and they happen to be very in right now. This is one of my favorites! Throw a scarf and cardigan over it to warm you up if necessary!
Believe it or not, plaid flannel is back in; buy it slightly over-sized and wear it unbuttoned with a t-shirt and scarf underneath.
A drape style top can hide and then as you go, accentuate your bump!
Another great option for a drape top that wraps for adjusting!
Size up in a great vest to change up any outfit!
For the Mom-to-be that wants to share her growing bump, a stretchy, bodycon, maxi can be just the way to go. This can be a go to item that can be dressed up with heels and jewels or down with a scarf and booties.
So I have fought the good fight, but I think I will soon be giving in because pregnancy, sneaker and a wedge seem to go pretty well together-not that you need to be pregnant to sport these!
A few other important notes when shopping for your maternity wardrobe:
*Be sure to get fitted for proper undergarments as needed, our bodies are changing and we need to accommodate them!
*Not every item has to read “maternity” on the label, size up in items at your favorite clothiers.
*I know that time can be precious, but as much as possible, try to shop as you go, this way you ensure items fit you properly. You will feel your best when your clothes fit, pregnant or not!
*Change up your limited maternity wardrobe with accessories, i.e. scarves, shoes/boots, jewelry, hats.
TOPSHOP also has a great maternity line! A limited selection of this line can be found at Nordstrom.
Did I miss one of your maternity favorites? Please let me know, I want to hear how everyone is dressing their bump!
